Hi all,

i'm new here and to the MG. I have a 2001 1.8 MGF. It's done about 77,000 miles and isn't in bad condition at all, especially for the price. The all important head gasket has been done which is a plus. It runs pretty well except for the idle, i've cleaned the stepper motor and reset it but it's not solved it so going to try a new one. Apart from that it's all good.

So hello from me,

Thanks for the warm welcome :)

The idle is reving up to about 1600 then dropping below 600, sometimes to the point of stalling. It only does it when you come off the throttle, i.e coming up to a junction. If it catch it before it drops too far then sometimes it will level out to a normal idle after a few seconds. Bit of a pain and left foot braking while tickling the throttle is getting a bit tedious.

That sounds like the throttle body is sticking, a lot of our cars came with a 48mm plastic throttle body, better to bin it and put on a 52mm alloy throttle body (alloy 48mm throttle bodies are also available) the bigger throttle body is an improvment in drivability

First thing to do is a throttle body reset. If that doesn't work there are other things to look at.

I've tried the reset but no difference. I've a new stepper motor on it's way so i will put that on and see if that cures it, fingers crossed
