The bending down doesn’t create the problem, it the return to the upright which underscores the aged.

yes my car is 1999 and it does have the adjust
lever mechanism.
I am not driving at the moment due to illness. My son is going to have a look at the car for
me. Are/is everything accessible or does he need to dismantle the dash?

The bolts on the adjustable column are further apart than the bolts on the non adjustable earlier column.
How did the installer get around this?
It sounds like they didn't do a very effective job.
The bracket should have been welded to the cross bar that lives under the dash.
You (or your son) should be able to access the mounting point by removing the speedo.
Also did they change the wiring and the ECU to the later version?
