I was surfing the web and picked up on this review, personally I am a real fan of this film and Steve McQueen. Whether its the best car chase film or not I leave to you, but it was created in time when there was no CGI and stunt drivers ( or did McQueen do his own driving) had to really take their life in ther own hands so you have to appreciate the skills of driving 350hp machines on skinny crossply tyres. Enjoy the review and clip. :broon:

It's one of the great car chases, and a great film. I saw it in the cinema in Aylesbury when it was first released and it made me feel very odd, you were getting all the visual cues but not the feeling g you would expect. The publicity was that Steve McQueen did all his own stunt driving in the film, he did in Lemans when the pros did have some fun with him as although he was keen he was a few seconds off the pace. The baddies car, the black Dodge Charger is perfectly chosen, as wicked as they come. I did have it's succesor on hire once, a Magnum but only the small block V8, not the 500 cu in one in the film. It may not be the greatest of all time, but beyond a doubt it moved the game on a long way.
Those Yank tanks can sustain 1 g laterally, although the wheel bearing grease might smoke a bit, what they wont do is sustain it in the other direction in a hurry. I once read a lateral g test in Road and Track where a 60s Chevrolet Impala was run on a dry skid pan in a tight circle, it made for some amazing photos.

Stan, I think you are wired the same way:-)
On a trip to the states in about '77 my Father rented a Mustang ( basic model with the 289 block) but all he complained about for 2 weeks was the constant stopping to refuel - it made a hell of a noise but didn't really do much other than go between traffic lights in a straight line with a neck jolt as the transmission wound up. Happy days :-)

My dad took me to the pics to see this movie and, even though I was under age, they let me in. :) So, it's always been one of my favourites and deserves the prize it got in my humble opinion. :broon:

Not a chase exactly, but I cannot watch this and several other scenes from Ronin with a huge smile on my face....

I'm sure I see it somewhere that when they filmed the chase it was done on open roads so some of the traffic was Jo public back in the good old days before health and safety.

I prefer the chase in Biullit to any of the above, it's a good film with insights into human nature, the characters are a bit one dimensional but then cinema is a visual medium. This gives you more investment in the outcome of the chase, Lt Bullit the lone good guy with his own tuned and loved 298 cu in mustang, a car name full of old west freedom associations against the mafia hit man/wheel man team shrouded in a sulphurous cloud switling from the gates of Hell,
Now if you want a candy floss car chase where no one gets hurt and the joke is on hollywood as much as the bad guys how about this one where for once the Dodge motor co is on the side of the Angels

It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing dark glasses, Hit it.

Nah! Best by far was 'The Great Race' :yesnod:
Jack Lemmon was suberb as the villain, and Tony Curtis shone as the good guy! :P

This film also contained the best western bar brawl, the best sword fight, and the funniest pie fight! EVER! :bust:

All the above are great races, in their own right. Keep em coming. :)

I like this race which uses the 'parkour running' technique.
