4x4 Recommendations?

4x4 Recommendations? was created by fast jan

Can anyone help recommend/suggest me a 4x4? I'm looking to get one as a second car, mostly to get me through the winter commuting so as I don't spend the entire winter hating my TF again

The biggest issue I have with my TF is, with sitting low to the ground, I have a real problem with on-coming glaring headlights being in my direct line of sight. My commute is country lanes and unlit A roads and with the nights drawing in it's starting to get dark when I leave work at 7 - and definitely dark on the nights I finish later.

So... I know nothing about 4x4's, I just know I want to sit 'somewhere substantially higher' than the TF, I know what ever I get will be noticeably thirstier than the TF, but I don't want a gas guzzling monster...

I've been trawling ebay looking at (amongst others) - Freelanders, Kia Sportage and Honda CRV... but I don't really know what I'm looking for

Has anyone got any advice they could offer?

Is it just the look of a 4x4 you want? What sort of mileage do you do?

I'm not an expert in 4x4, but I have driven quite a few Diahatsu abroad for work which were quite impressive. Solid and comfortable.
Never thought I would recommend a Jap vehicle!
Have also driven Vitara on hols: quite good but a bit gay imo, not a prob if you are a girl!
You could always continue the HGF paranoia with a Freelander!

It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..

Personally Jan I'd only buy one with 'proper' 4 wheel drive. Ie not electronically operated

Look for a 4x4 with 2 gear sticks. One for gears, one for transfer box (2/4 wheel drive)

And be wary of imitation 4x4s.... Ie only have 2 wheel drive (some rav 4s etc)

Diesel Destroyer.. 'The bringer of dreams'

It's more the height of a 4x4 - I'm not adverse to their looks, I just want to be on a height level with all the Range Rovers/Audis that seem to blind me...

Mileage would be pretty low, maybe 4000 a year as I don't intend using it all year round as it won't be replacing the TF :)

A work colleague has Rav 4, which he speaks highly of.
Personally I would steer clear of Korean makes.
Just my opinion.....

I forgot to mention - it's got to be a low budget buy - I'm restricting prices to £1000 or less (or thereabouts) so I won't be looking at anything particularly new, so long as it has power steering I'm really not fussy about anything much else.

Allan I'm not sure an imitation 4x4 would be a real problem for me? I've seen the 4x4s struggle up the hill at the back of my house.... and watched the old corsa's sail past them!

Seeing as the Fatboys are fairly old, are they likely to have power steering? I have to drive my OHs non-PS diesel corsa occasionally, and I find it a pig of a car to manouver & park. It's soooo heavy considering how small it is...

Thats a low budget!
Suzuki Jimny/Samurai maybe? Driven them on hols: competent enough. High driving position as well, which you want.

It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..
