I used to do a lot of offroading and I used an old Range Rover.
The interesting thing( to me anyway) was that the best was unsurprisingly the LandRover, but pretty close in ability was the ....

LADA NIVA 4X4!

Cheap as chips and would go anywhere.

Much easier to manoeuvre than the RangeRover, and a whole lot cheaper too.

Plus one on the Jimny. :broon: Here's the 'Samurai', the off road version, at Cannock chase. They look like great fun, if you like swimming. :)

cjj wrote: As said, if you want 4x4 then make sure that any vehicle you fancy hasn't been converted to 2 wheel drive. A lot of Freelanders have this done for 2 reasons, the first being the one they will advertise (it is better on mpg) but the second is the fact the viscous coupling has failed and it is cheeper to just disconnect the drive shaft and fit a blanking plug.

How would I know if one had been converted to 2wd? Would it be pretty obvious?

I had kind of half considered a people carrier as my mum has a Xara Picasso and it's really cheap to run (but that might be her constant 56.6 mph speeds ;) ).. but then I decided against it just because they are so uncool!!!

But the more I think about it, the more it might make sense - I'm not bothered about the 4x4 aspect (maybe I should change the thread title to 'recommend me a high driving position car!), it would be nice to have a little more comfort than the SJ & Jimneys offer and it would certainly be handy having a car that the family could go in on the rare occasions the 4 of us do go out together rather than having to shoe-horn the 6' plus kids into the back of Andy's corsa...

Hmm... A lot of food for thought - thanks guys for the help, it's all much appreciated :broon:

I've remembered something else I don't like about Mums Picasso - the shape of the bonnet drops off and I couldn't see where the front end was... I only drove it a couple of times though so I guess this is something I'd get used to if it was my daily drive :-?

Am I just trying to talk myself out of a people carrier though just because their people carriers?!!

I'm still preferring the looks of the freelander - am I right in thinking these have k series engines (meaning I could still get Russell to fix it when it went wrong?)

Jan, After all the excellent advice , i think that what you are basically after a higher driving position above all else, so Pandas etc may not fit the bill. By about a foot.
Freelanders have the K series.
If you want to know if 4x4 is working: simple test: find a gravelly layby and drop the clutch at high revs: you should leave 4 take off marks. Low and high range working: select low range and test speed v revs at 30. Stop, select high range and revs should be lower at 30 than in in low range. Some 4x4 let you do this on the fly.

It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..
