Another clue. Backing vocals were by a Northen Soul diva whose biggest solo hit was successfully covered by an Electropop duo.

I didn't see Elton as a hippy either I was clutching at the crocodile (rock) reference straw
Am I right in thinking the backing singer was Gloria Jones (Tainted love) ?

Yes it was Gloria Jones and yes it was T Rex "Did you ever see a woman,coming out of New York City,with a frog in her hand."
For those who don't know Gloria's song was Tainted Love
