For those who haven't read/caught up with Bacchus's thread - "Tough Times Here in Tasmania"...

bacchus wrote: Thanks Birks, if you wish to set up a donation thread that would be great, I would prefer any donations be directed straight to the Australian Red Cross - Tasmanian Bushfire Appeal as they have the resources and infrastructure to deal with it properly and place the funds where most needed. The Australian Red Cross have also indicated that 100% of monies donated will go to the relief effort with the Tasmanian Government picking up the tab for any administration fees.

I hope your brother stays safe and and any fire in his area are quickly brought under control with a minimum of damage.

The video below was taken from an RC Helicopter detailing the damage in just one street of the devastated seaside town of Dunalley

Cheers,
Craig

The situation over there really is terrible, if you feel you can donate then please do so.

I tried to donate but it wouldn't let me progress without putting a valid Australian phone number and zip code.

Anyone managed it yet?

Worked ok for me but I notice that as I hadn't put in a state it reverted back asking for a state but the country selection defaulted back to Australia again.

I remember vividly the the Ash Wednesday fires of 1983 :( I was at school and the sky went dark and we could see the flames on the hills in the distance.

Dontated

My mother was sent newspapers from Ash Wednesday by her friends in Australia. I could not believe the devastation and the pictures showed how dark it was. I think the thing that amazed me most was the pictures of brick chimney stacks left on blackened ground with nothing else standing. There were pictures of people standing with hoses trying to wet their houses in an attempt (in some cases a tragic failed attempt) to save their property.

I can only feel for the people suffering.

I was 10 at the time, Most of Adelaide was ringed by fire and although we were miles from danger it was frightening. I can only feel for the people in Tasmania and New South Wales. Friends of ours in the Adelaide hills had their house ringed by fire, luckily the house was OK the same cannot be said for the other houses in there road.

Hopefully people are doing the sensible thing and getting out early...
