Don't think I will be planning a driving trip through Singapore.

But strangely enough, I have to agree with most of the points though.

And you're more likely to get a public birching than a slap on the wrist.:omg: if convicted.

I remember all the cars in Singapore, even the real old bangers having very fancy wheels.

Nothing to do with driving but I'm pretty sure chewing gum was banned too,the penalties for littering are very harsh there.

I actually agree with most of those. Perhaps banning enlarging engine capacity is going a bit too far though.

Some of the modifications that are allowed are quite funny - http://www.onemotoring.com.sg/publish/onemotoring/en/lta_information_guidelines/modifications_and_vehoffences/modification_guide/modification_allowed.html

I week ended in Singapore last year while doing 2 weeks work in Malaysia last year. I was sitting on the terrace of a posh bar enjoying a sunset drink and a smoke. As you do if you're me.

Two patrolling policemen stopped by, enquired politely whether I was enjoying my stay in Singapore, recommended a nearby restaurant that served excellent British food, then politely reminded me that any part of a cigarette carelessly disposed of, including wind blown ash, attracted a 'severe penalty'. Also that I may not take my drink over the perimeter of the premises as that would technically be drinking in the street, which is illegal.

That said, one of the safest and cleanest places I have ever visited.

It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..

I gather, John, that locals can be stopped if smoking and their packet checked to make sure it is duty paid. Duty free cigarettes cannot be taken into Singapore if I recall.

Malaysia has quite a car modifying scene, though. A bit Max-Power, unfortunately, but plenty of classic British cars, with lots of Minis. Import duties are extremely high to protect the local manufacturers, so it's mostly Protons and Peroduas getting modified.
