An active detector s illegal. Passive is legal, Road Angel has this feature: alerts you to the fact you have been pinged to give you the chance of slowing down to beat the average speed factor.
It does work: personal experience. :yesnod:
I don't bother with it now: decided to be a good boy with speed limits. Stuck to it so far!
Pm me if you're interested. Or anyone else. Been in the glovebox unused for the past year.

It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..

They also don't help with some cameras in vans. They don't use radar, instead use a laser rangefinder and time you over a measured distance.

You can download the speed camera positions from various sites to add to a satnav as POI. These include the usual mobile camera haunts.

Radar detectors are pretty much extinct now and they were a pain in the butt when they were in use I used to have a Snooper with a radar attachment I soon unplugged it as they produced too many false alarms basically every time you passed a building with an automatic door.
The only type of speed cameras that use Radar now are the old Gatso type you're far more likely to encounter the Truvelo type which are triggered by crossing Piezo electric strips in the road as for mobile cameras they tend to be of the Laser variety and the common view is that though these can be detected by the time you get a warning its probably too late . the only total defence against mobile laser cameras are diffusers or jammers as they are also known but you could leave yourself open to a charge of peverting the course of justice which is a tad more serious than a £60 fine and 3 points
So to sum up the best option is a Gps type device such as Road angel (which I use) which has an auto update feature and the ability to add new cameras to the database instantly

The laser guns do not produce scatter the laser detector element only works when you are being targeted which if your only slightly over may give you a chance to reduce your speed but i wouldn't rely on it
