I was hoping to get my laptop on the job but there appears to be an ishoo with starting it up that a system restore hasn't managed to fix. I can start it up in safety mode so spent a lot of yesterday zipping all my photo albums and saving them onto any discs/memory sticks with any space left so that I can rebuild it. It's all very frustrating. One album threatened to take over four hours to compress, in the end it just took 20 mins but that was a long and annoying 20 mins!
I'm not having a happy time with technology at the moment. It's great when it works but when it doesn't, it really doesn't.
Ooh, another question, my laptop is an HP running vista and I have backup discs for that but I also have the ones for Offsprings Asus running windows 7. Could I try putting the windows 7 backup discs on the HP or will it not work at all? Anyone have a clue?

:omg: down there for dancing!!! I watched the video 3 times but couldn't make out what was being clicked to add a file. Thought it was the tiny icons at the top. Thanks FBOG.
Thanks Brian, I figured that was likely to be the case.

Posted 11 years 2 weeks ago #133753If you wish to recover the data stored on it, It's important that you don't keep turning it on and off. Every time you do so it's going to make it all the more unlikely that your data can be recovered.
You probably won't want to attempt this yourself, though it's not that hard to do and you could probably do it yourself if you could be ar$ed.
So here's a rough outline of the procedure that a technician or geek would do.
The hard drive is removed from the machine and with the use of another computer, suitable connection hardware and a data recovery program. The data is harvested from your old hard drive and saved.
Most if not all of your data can probably be recovered if they get to it before it's finally buggered.
The hard drive could then be replaced with a new one and once a the operating system is loaded your recovered data can be loaded onto your machine.
Or your data can be loaded onto your new machine if you chose to replace the old one.

Posted 11 years 2 weeks ago #133759try each memory stick in every usb port; you may find one that the machine likes and can see.
secondly, try bog standard CDR rather than DVDRW, the data is held in a more open structure so is less susceptible to head alignment/wear than DVDRW
if it does come to hammer time, you can buy a hard drive adaptor which will convert your 2.5" drive to usb to allow it to plug into another machine for recovery.
cost is about £10 off ebay, plus a couple of hours with a little screwdriver to strip the lappy down.

Posted 11 years 1 week ago #133763as long as you have access to your pics I'd recommend to upload them to a cloud drive.
E.g. Google offers 15GB of space. Could be a quick first solution before you fix the hardware.
And for the future do regular backups to an external hard drive. Unfortunately most people see the importance of back ups only when it's too late...
