Thanks very much for all suggestions.
I'm scared to switch it on now! :hgf:
I will give the cloud storage a go as I noticed there was a safe mode with network option. Will I be alright using Firefox? Also, will photobucket or google drive take the compressed folders or do I upload the unzipped files?
I might give it a go tomorrow night instead as I've been working on this since Saturday and I'm shattered! I'm dreaming about file compression! Haha
Bertl, you are right of course. I've learnt my lesson.
Tattie it worked for me with one quick tap in the box...

Any suggestions would be very welcome
I was hoping to get my laptop on the job but there appears to be an ishoo with starting it up that a system restore hasn't managed to fix.
Beth, when in system restore mode you should get 2 further options.
1) Create recover disk
2) backup data
The recovery disk is a reinstalable copy of the operating system (windows vista in your case) which will enable you to rebuild your laptop if you have to replace the hard drive.
The backup option will copy all your files and system settings.
You should be able to complete both those options to either DVDR (several!) or a USB attached Hdd
The latter will be quickest.
You can get a 500gb portable HDD from Amazon for less than £40' and they are available in Staples for £39.99 if you can't wait for the post.
With a quick google I found this
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c00809678
It takes you through the process, and there are details for reinstalling from the recovery disk.
Once you've resurrected your laptop you can use the USB HDD to take regular backups.
You most likely won't be able to transfer Windows 7 from your other laptops as it will be locked to the manufacturer, and possibly even the main board model
I hope that helps
