Music with lasting appeal.... was created by John and Sue

I recorded Pink Floyd at Live 8 a while back and got round to watching it today. While doing the ironing. I know, new man and all that.

I got to wondering whilst watching the crowd, ranging from teenagers to old crusties like me, who knew every word of every song, whether in 30 or 40 years time that history would repeat with Lady Gaga, Arctic Monkeys etc? The musicianship of the Floyd was impeccable.

Can't really see any of today's 'stars' managing it. Could be wrong.

My #2 daughter rang me a while back, excited at having been to a Patti Smith concert: about 30 years after I saw her at Earls Court......

It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..

You only have to watch the mtv music awards for your answer john, none of them can sing live and they all have songs out on a weekly basis meaning that last weeks song is soon forgotten about.

I ask my missus the same thing every time I put my music on in the car which has in no particular order...

Queen
Dexys midnight runners
Ska
Punk
Electronic
Classical
Rolling Stones
Alison moyet/yahoo
Beatles/McCartney/Lennon
Slade
80's pop
90's rap
Ibiza trance

The only thing I can't stand is traditional jazz

I think in 30 years time we'll be saying that the Beatles song we've just listened to is 75 years old but still sounds good :broon:

I've pontificated about the fundamental difference before so I'll just quote myself.

David Aiketgate wrote: Ah, :pop:
we belong to a golden age when music was made by gifted musicians on real instruments. A lot of them were ugly ungainly bastards, but that didn't matter because the ONLY thing was the MUSIC.

Now the process seems to be:-

Find someone who looks good.

Teach them to lipsynch.

Train them to jig about.

Dress them slutty/sexy.

Put a load of sexy/slutty dancers behind them to make their jigging about look coordinated.

Manufacture some backing music with an insistent beat.

Put a vocal lead on. If the 'star' can vaguely approximate singing put it through an autotune and enhance it. Multiple track it with people in the wings who can actually sing.

...and there you have her...

Cheryl Cole.

I've said this before too but it's worth repeating. No one can dance about and sing at the same time. No one. So as Elton John so rightly said at an MTV awards show, 'Madonna? Best LIVE performance? Fuck off!

The thing with Tina Turner is she would sing and dance her ass off, and would be sweating and out of breath by the end of the song, yet would still sound great. The current crop do their choreography without missing a note and without getting winded. Possible while actually singing? I don't think so!
For other examples look at Mick and the boys, and even The Blues Brothers! Saw Rod Stewart in concert a couple of years ago. He put on a great show and worked hard. The show was all real and we enjoyed every minute of it.

I went to see Joe Bonamassa recently, the guy is an absolute genius and well accomplished musician and only 36 years old, but its the music that lives on he plays Blues and adds his spin on it, he is amazingly not that well known but is known as a musicians musician, if you like blues check him out I was blown away.
