Carpet insulation

After all the rain we've had, I discovered that the passenger foot well was very wet. :(
Obviously water getting in via the heater box [I have mk1]. On removing the insulation under the carpet, it was in a poor state, so not worth replacing.
Replacements from B&G were quite expensive, so I have ordered a roll of 15mm general car insulation & will cut to shape.
To prevent it reoccurring, can the box be sealed & where does the water get in? Don't want the hassle of fitting a TF snorkel.

Personally.. I'd fit the TF snorkel.. Sealed at time of install.. And fit the Jaylad servo bracket at the same time..

It's not that difficult to fit the snorkel.. It does a much better job of keeping water out.. And the improvement to brake pedal feel will make it worth the extra effort.

You're not to far from me are ya? (Swindon)

You're always welcome to pop over one weekend and I'll show ya the easy way of getting the old air box off

I agree with DD....if you need to re-bed your current heater air intake box you might as well replace it with the TF version which bolts down in 6 places rather than 4. The old box is not too bad to remove if you are replacing it as you can sacrifice it in the process. I suggest you open your bonnet and take a look at your current box which is behind the brake servo - the rusty flap thing you have under the scuttle air intake is part of it and goes if you replace the box with the TF version. Water tends to stand where the box attaches to the scuttle and eventually it finds its way under the seal and in to the passanger footwell via the heater air duct. Is you current box cracked? Can you park the car for now so that the water doesn't pool around the box? You may want to try this around the seal but it is a very long shot:

It's stuff I use on the boat to stop deck leaks and it does work after mult applications.

Rain gets into the box and is supposed to drain away before it fills up and overtops the lip around the opening into the car.
Unfortunately the drain hole (front left bottom corner) is pretty small and is easily blocked. So the box starts to fill up.

The quickest cheapest way is to enlarge THE DRAIN HOLE. It's quick and cheap and might solve the problem. If not it makes it easier to remove the box!

I've just remembered that you already have an enlarged orifice Roger.
So scrub the above.

Thanks for your comments David ;)
As shown, I had to cut the box to accommodate the servo bracket fitted.
So where is the water getting in & why does it not drain away?
Also, I don't understand how it works & why is it so large?

Water enters the box from the vent at the top and, in theory exits via the drain hole.
However water can also enter via the foam seal between the bottom of the box and the bodywork. It can also enter in that same area via the welds/seams between the various metal parts. I have a photo somewhere.

As to why the box is the size it is.

After removing scuttle, I had a look at the plate which presumably is there to stop water entering the air intake.
There is about a 5mm gap each side of the plate which I sealed. Pouring water onto screen, it goes straight into the box, via the scuttle grill & still ran down the baulkhead into the R/H side of the passenger footwell.
As said there are 2 large holes in the bottom corners of the box, made for fitting servo brackets, so there must be a
big leak somewhere. :yesnod:
Not wanting the hassle of removing box, I thought that if the water could not enter the box, it would solve problem ;)
So i duck taped over the scuttle grill & tried the water test again. Bingo, no leak.
What would be the consequence of leaving it in place? Would have thought that there was enough air circulating under bonnet. OK I know it's a bodge job B) Another thought was fitting a plastic plate attached to the front of the box
& angled upwards, covering the whole of the top of the box, but still leaving air circulation.
The new insulation fitted a treat & cost a tenner & I also drilled a hole in the footwell where the water accumulated, just in case.
