clutch failure, your opinion please? was created by Raccoon

yesterday the clutch in the better half's Lacetti failed...

The pedal became very soft and the clutch did not react any more, so no proper gear change possible.

I did not find the time to check it today, had a quick look at the brake fluid level only - between min and max.

Would you agree that the clutch master cylinder is the first part to check??

Can it be easily seen if the part is faulty?? :-?

Apologies for asking a question about a non-MG car - I assume some basics are similar on all cars...

I'm confused, easily done, what does the brake fluid level have to do with the clutch?

I've never heard of that. Has the Lacetti got a hydraulic clutch or is it cable operated?

Robin ;)

just had a look at some technical drawings.
It has a hydraulic clutch actually, the clutch master cylinder (1) is fed from the break fluid reservoir through hose 5:

So my idea was that there may be a leak somewhere that causes the soft pedal by too low pressure, the impulse from the clutch pedal is not transmitted to the clutch plate.
Or does this sound nonsense??

Will dive a little deeper tomorrow.

The reservoir is simply a feed for the clutch master cylinder, if you're losing pressure after pushing the clutch pedal any leak must be on the other side. Check for any leaks on the brake master cylinder and all parts from there to the pipe marked 12.

Probably most well known as Top Gear's second reasonably priced car. They used it from 2006 to 2010.

Looked very similar to the first reasonably priced car, the Suzuki Liani.

ok, found the reason - air in the system.

After bleeding it works again as it should.

Now I only have to find the reason for the air bubbles...
