You can run the car without the heatshield in place.
You could try and make some brackets to hold it in place. There is also the option of exhaust heat wrap tape.

If you mean the heat shield by the alternator then it's best to be left in place as the latent heat from the manifold and down pipe keep the excessive heat away from it; they are known to have a short life anyway.

The heat shield I am referring to is the one over the exhaust manifold, held in place with three bolts/screws I have managed to remove the brackets from the old exhaust but had hoped they would not be needed as it would allow more air circulation around the engine but will bow to those more experienced than me

Why would you want more hot air circulating around the very enclosed engine bay?

Best to re-fit, the one over the manifold is for radiant heat deflection as it's quite close to the engine bay bulkhead (which the fuel tank sits behind!)

Going to take even more of forum members and replace coolant pipes that run underneath with stainless, leaving only the back brakes to do. Thanks again
