possible clutch issue

When I bought my TF thought the clutch felt OK, only after having it for a bit did I realise that when I booted it I got a clutch burning smell. Put it down to my clumsy gear change and not pushing the clutch up and down quick enough.

Had a new clutch fitted and was told that the clutch release arm was seized, the clutch burning smell was because the release arm wasn't releasing quick enough.

My service history states .. new clutch ,new clutch pipe (master cylinder to slave) , new slave cylinder and fresh fluid all done 18 months and 4000 miles ago so no wonder everything looks relativly clean and new.

ordered a new throttle cable from b and g 40 quid including postage which is a considerable saving over the same part from rimmers.

will get that fitted next weekend and hopefully should be all good again

New throttle cable was fitted over the weekend easy enough job but did have to drop the accelerator pedal to remove the old one and fit the new one any way I think it took about 45 mins in total but what a differance its made . Throttle has now got response in all positions rather than it just feeling like an on / off switch ... so yes much happier with it now .

After realising my clutch and brake pedal rubbers were split when I was doing the throttle cable I ordered some genuine mg pedal rubbers cost around a 5ver for the pair so will get them fitted

then probably be buying some osram night breaker plus headlight bulbs and ice white side light bulbs to improve the dismal road ilumination..

then ive got 1 alloy that needs a referb .. previous owner made friends with a few curbs but the other 3 alloys are mint.

then 2 x rear tyres which im goin for toyo proxis t1r xl's hopefully will be alot grippier than the bloody rubish federals that are on it currently.

and then hopefully off to bodyshop at the end of march beginning of april for a respray ... was goin to just have the bits that were needed doin but thought sod it and get the whole thing painted...

then sub frames need the surface rust cleaning off , rust treated and painted

just glad summers on its way lol

Been keeping an eye on the clutch over the last few months since I originally posted this topic . As I stated previously the car had a new clutch pipe . New slave cylinder and I changed the fluid and checked the opperation on the clutch arm which was fine and still is... now at that point the clutch bite was around the middle of the pedal but a couple of months down the road and the bite in now around an inch from the very top of the pedal so im now pritty certain that the clutch is almost worn out.

at the moment im still not slipping under load but its only a matter of time before the bite is at the top of the pedal and I start having trouble getting it in gear etc

so new clutch is going to be needed shortly

Being local to me Craig ring around you might be suprised how competitive they are against each other £180 to £250 fitted you will most likely find.
A decent clutch kit supply only normally circa £60.00.

Cheapest ive been quoted is 295 quid and the most is 425 quid for the clutch ... cheapest being a1 clutches round the corner but ive had 2 mates who used to work there and both have said avoid like the plague!! They said that they only ever changed the friction plate.

I think it may be time to just give up with it and get something newer.

Tfs got mot in june and I may just part exchange it before the mot or take it a week or 2 early to see if it gets through or what its gunna need.

shame really as I really like the tf

It doesn't matter what kind of car it is..... the clutch is a consumable service item, unless of course the car in question has an automatic transmission.
Then the whole transmission will probably sh!t itself at great cost to the management.

I see Rimmer's have clutch kits on special at the moment for £125.00 ex VAT £150.00 inc VAT. And given that Rimmers are quite pricey even on a good day. You should shop about you'll probably find one for even less.
Once armed with the replacement parts you can either have a crack at it yourself or find a workshop to fit it for a sensible price.

Or you could trade it in on another car and have the clutch or worse go in it in 3 weeks!
You can't expect consumable parts to go forever, all cars have them and your going to be using them up at much the same rate, no matter what kind of car it is.
Clutches get used up like tyres, oil, fuel, sparkplugs etc....... They only do so many miles, so even if you get another car your still going to be using them up.

Sometimes it's better to go with the devil you know than the devil you don't!
If the only real problem is the clutch, your probably better off just fixing it. All said and done it's just the same clutch as as assorted Metros, Rovers etc. It's neither going to be very technically challenging nor should it be expensive.
You could spend more to end up in a worse situation, then still have to fix it up too.

At the end of the day you can have a car you like or end up with some bloody awful Shitroen, Poxhall or some other automotive white goods that you don't like.........Your choice!

My arguement is I paid 2 grand for the car from a specialist mgf /tf dealer thinking it would be all good ... its been nothing but!!

Ive spent over a grand in 10 months on parts and the list never gets smaller if anything it keeps getting bigger.

yes clutch is worn not a problem ive done them before but not on one of these things and ive read that the whole rear subframe and engine out the car and I just cnt do that on my drive , so ill have to pay some one to do it but they all want riducilous money ..yea I can get a descent clutch kit for 90 quid but its finding someone who I trust to do it.

thsts not the end of it . Its got coolant leaks . Water leaks . Bcu issues again . Lsmbda sensor is f****** . Cat is f****** . I think the ht leads and coil packs could do with replacing . Body work needs sorting before it rusts through . Subframes need sorting out ... so its not just the clutch the whole f******* thing is slowly falling apart and I just cant justify keep throwing money at something thats worth f*** all .

were not all made of money im on a modest wage with a mrs and 2 young kids money doesnt grow on trees
