Rough Luck Racing for Head Gasket work
A big thank you to forum members who pointed me towards Rough Luck Racing's mobile service for Roxy's head gasket / oil leak problems.
Jon Norris and his wife Claire drove to Ayrshire from Northumberland on Tuesday night, getting to us at 8.40pm. We gave them drinks, dinner and a bed - and they were up and working on Roxy at 7.30am.
They then worked till 7.30pm, stopping only for a quick lunch. I have to say that as they found more and more bodges on what was a one owner car that had supposedly been maintained by an MG Specialist garage in Northern Ireland, I felt sicker and sicker. HGF failure confirmed with coolant getting into cylinder 2; missing bolts; sealant where it shouldn't be; incorrectly torqued nuts and valve issues.... Even the bottle of Rosé I had for lunch didn't help.
Anyway, the long and short of it is that Roxy is now back to health, with reground valve seats, correct bolts, replaced clips and everything as it should be. And, despite all of the extra work Jon and Claire did, they only charged me what they'd quoted for the head gasket change and, for my peace of mind, a low coolant alarm.
Really nice people. VERY professional and obviously expert on all things F and TF related.
So, if any of you out there have the need of an expert for your MG, don't hesitate. Give Jon and Claire at Rough Luck a call - they're brilliant!

Hi Winko
My TF suffered the dreaded HGF a week or so ago. My first and only call was to Jon as I've heard nothing but good stuff about him.
Can you advise me on any prep work to do prior to his arrival just to make things easier for him?

Hi Steve,
Sorry to hear about the HGF - it's a sickener isn't it?
Your choice of Jon is a great one - he's ace - as is his other half - who twiddles the spanners alongside him.
If you're time strapped, you don't need to do anything. But to make his life easier, I made sure Roxy was on level ground and removed the engine access panel and the plastic shroud in the front spare wheel well - so he could get to the bulkhead bleed easily.
After that, just keep the kettle on!

all access panels already removed as I was in the process of giving the TF a service when the HGF happened. I decided to treat the engine to some flushing oil and it worked by flushing out someone's past bodge job ( K seal me thinks) . Now I have £50 worth of oil in the coolant and a knackered New filter :bang:
Yes it's definitely a sickener but at least we have guy's like Jon to get us back on the road again

Jon and Claire came out to my car last week and I can definately second Winko on his recommendation. :broon:
I wasn't sure it was gasket failure but Jon tested and checked everything thoroughly. He diagnosed failure and after the strip down he was right the gasket had gone. :hgf:
You're in safe hands they're a great team.

I'm another who recommends Jon and Claire, they came to Scotland last year to do my mot advisory work, superb job and even with the fuel costs, were still cheaper than local garages quoted,so its a big thumbs up from me :broon:  :woohoo:
