I've carried a few bits of long timber when I was doing our built in wardrobes, most of them were 6M long as that's what we do at work, 1 was a thin bit of beading, tied 1 end to the roll hoop, middle resting on the screen surround and theother end was stopped from bending by a piece of rope around the front tie down point - it didn't stop it from snapping as I hit 70 on the way home.

Another time we bought a new headboard for the bed, was wider than the car so was roped to the boot, I didn't rush on the way home.
