stupid (?) HGF question was created by birks

As a very naive person when it comes to the internal workings of the combustion engine, please forgive me for what may be a really stupid question...

Are ALL MGF/TFs prone to HGF or is it just certain models, years etc?

I have 97 1.8vvc Mk1 MGF that's done approx 69K (didn't know all that before joining these forums...see I am learning!)...should I be worried??

new Toyos going on on Monday! Aerial getting sorted, along with a good clean & polish (before n after pics to be done!) planned for tomorrow! :yesnod:

thanks
Maggy x

Not all MGFs get HGF - it's a fallacy! Enjoy your car, keep an eye on the coolant level in the expansion tank once a week, and don't worry.

Some of us have had HGF and some haven't.....

Even if you do it's not the end of the world any more - thanks to Russell at MGRoverSolutions you can get it repaired for less than £400 now. Just remember that if you do lose coolant DO NOT DRIVE IT AT ALL... get towed and give Russell a buzz.....

All engines have common layout and in theory have the same risk of HGF. It is more a luck game than being an innevitability, but you can say that with ANY car.

Don't forget you will need to scrub the tyres in a bit to get rid of the protective coating that they get during manufacture. They should be OK after a couple of hundred miles. Hope you like the Toyos.

Most HGFs can probably be traced back to a loss of coolant, in my opinion.
One mod above any other will reduce the chance of suffering gasket failure, and that is to fit a low-coolant alarm.:yesnod:

Thanks guys..I do check the level in my expansion tank fairly regularly, and it's rarely been a problem, tho it was lower than normal last time I checked- but I'll double check it tomorrow. Where do I get a coolant alarm...and yup..you've guessed..are they easy to fit? :dunno:

Sorry for the daft questions...but I do want to learn! :)

You should always check your coolant level at the same time/same condition as the level can vary.

You can buy low level kits from the likes of Brown and Gammons.
You can also make up your own as I did:- http://www.the-t-bar.com/showthread.php?t=42

Totally new tank/cap etc - gone are the awful 'blow every minute' expansion caps!

Sounds interesting...keep us posted - right now the B&G options looks very expensive...and the DIY version looks very complicated for a first project!

Thanks for the replies tho :bye:
