Anyway, to cut a long story short, on the way home tonight, it got A LOT worse, and I pulled over, when I tried to select reverse, not a hope in hell..
A local mechanic had quoted me a very good price to fix the issue, and I was planning on getting it done next week, but alas I was too late... just left a message on his answerphone, hoping he can resolve it either today or tomorrow, he reckon's it's less than an hours work...
Not a good day...

A local chap was going to fix a couple of brackets which he said were the problem, but had not got around to doing it yet.
No mention of cables though, and would be surprised if it WAS that as I have only (apparently) lost reverse.....

Further to this, was talking about the issue to another mate, this morning who knows a lot about cars, but has always stayed away from Mgf's he had a quick look and the problem is a bolt has either sheared off or become loose and dropped out. The bolt hold the assembly in that holds the gear stick if that makes sense, and I can now get 1st and 2nd, but not any others.... He is going to put a "get you home" bolt in, but I will need a proper one at some point.. anyone know where I can get Rover Spares?

Ah, so the problem is the mechanism under the gear lever. This is notorious for becoming loose/worn causing gear change problems. You could buy the Mike Satur slick shift kit or get a second hand mechanism from VVC Steve or another breaker.

Ah well, you know what they say - As one door closes another one slams in your face!
