I have had a problem with a wonky gear stick since I brought the car, but it has (without me noticing) got steadily worse) It became apparent when Karen (aka Mrs that one) went to take it to work last week and could not get the car in gear.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, on the way home tonight, it got A LOT worse, and I pulled over, when I tried to select reverse, not a hope in hell..

A local mechanic had quoted me a very good price to fix the issue, and I was planning on getting it done next week, but alas I was too late... just left a message on his answerphone, hoping he can resolve it either today or tomorrow, he reckon's it's less than an hours work...

Not a good day...

not sure.... the gear stick has been "loose" since I brought the car, but has got steadily worse, got really bad this evening when I was almost home and I coasted into a car park, found that I could not get reverse, all other gears seems ok, but pull away feel like I am in third ( I quite possibly was)

A local chap was going to fix a couple of brackets which he said were the problem, but had not got around to doing it yet.

No mention of cables though, and would be surprised if it WAS that as I have only (apparently) lost reverse.....

Have been struggling to get hold of the mechanic who had offered to fix this (before it finally gave up the ghost yesterday) finally just called me and is hoping to fix it tomorrow, fingers crossed as I have had to book a days leave as this my daily drive.....

turns out the guy is totally un-reliable... he promised to be over bu mid-day yesterday, and despite about half a dozen phone calls and two voicemails.... no response.... not impressed at all... as I am now car-less....

Further to this, was talking about the issue to another mate, this morning who knows a lot about cars, but has always stayed away from Mgf's he had a quick look and the problem is a bolt has either sheared off or become loose and dropped out. The bolt hold the assembly in that holds the gear stick if that makes sense, and I can now get 1st and 2nd, but not any others.... He is going to put a "get you home" bolt in, but I will need a proper one at some point.. anyone know where I can get Rover Spares?

Ah, so the problem is the mechanism under the gear lever. This is notorious for becoming loose/worn causing gear change problems. You could buy the Mike Satur slick shift kit or get a second hand mechanism from VVC Steve or another breaker.

ok.. All fixed now, mate managed to get a new "bush" (in fact an entire assembly) from the local scrappy, all fitted and working, (much better than ever!)

Only... problem now, is the window stop on the drivers door has failed...

:(

Ah well, you know what they say - As one door closes another one slams in your face!

You have to decide which fault you can live with and leave one. Fixing everything just irritates the car.
