now using this guy at MAC Motors MG , he did all the tricky stuff to get my car through the MOT last year, seems like a good guy... why I did not call him in the first place, I have NO idea...

Looking forward to hearing what a good job's been done.:yesnod:

It is great to have feedback about these MG specialists, like Saint Russell, who are dedicated to the marque and have kept so many alive, so please let us know the good results. it should feel like a new car when you get it back.

just spoke to the mechanic, initial diagnosis is good, he think, it may not be a new clutch.... apparently the arm (?) is seized, and he has freed it off and it already runs better... he has suggested that he can sort this, send it away, and let me see how I get on.. bottom line is, he thinks it will be a good deal cheaper....

at last some good news!

Stay tuned for more updates... I will be talking to him after lunch.....

Oh great, that's good news! The seized clutch arm is a regular problem on these cars.:yesnod:

Usually caused by the car not being used for a time. Once freed , it should be fine if it's used regularly.
I posted a picture of someone's unique method of keeping the arm lubricated. Using a piece of cable tidy and oil/grease soaked material.

I sprayed my clutch arm with white lithium grease, two years ago and never had a problem. However the car is used daily so that helps.

ok.. he has given me the car back, and I have driven it back to work.. the clutch still feels like it is slipping a little, but I really need to take it for proper drive on the way home...

Do the clutch tests that David suggested originally, try pulling away in second gear with the brakes on slipping the clutch a bit and it should stall, if it dont the clutch is slipping. please let us know

Also, as the arm has been seized it may take a while to recover full movement. The other thing to keep an eye on is the slave cylinder, as the strain put on it by the resistance of the arm can damage the seals.

just felt I should resurrect this thread.. I was trying to get a stub axle to replace the faulty one on my car, and decided to give the mechanic above a call just on the offchance he may have one in stock.. Turns out, he did not, but had almost brought one the day before, he got on the phone, re-ordered it, and I am collecting it from his house tonight, for fitting tomorrow, once the deal was done, he did make reference to some of the stuff I had said here and elsewhere, but said he probably deserved it, bottom line, he has got me out of hole, and does seem like a decent chap, he was obviously having a bit of an off period..
