I'm thinking about upgrading the wheels and brakes on our MK 1....

Are these a reasonable price?

What goes on with the rear brakes regarding upgrades?

Thanks

I would say they were on the slightly expensive side. If they were cheap they would have gone by now.

The trophy/ 160 setup retains the standard rear brakes with the AP fronts.:dunno: Clive and a number of others have managed to obtain 280mm rear upgrade kits which use the standard caliper.

So no AP option for the rear then?

Also, what's the prefered choice regarding discs and pads?

I use standard discs and pads, but concentrate my efforts on keeping the callipers in tiptop condition. This way I find that the brakes are perfectly acceptable.

If you are a hard charging sort of driver, then you may benefit from grooved discs and greenstuff pads.

Or you can use a more aggressive pad, Mintex do a series of varying grip; the Mintex 1177 pads will improve your braking but chew through discs. Be prepared to replace discs and pads annually, if not more often depending on use.

Mintex 1144 are a great road pad, i use 1155 front and 1144s rear on my Lotus on track days... 1144s all round are the recomended on that.
EBC Ultimax Disks seem to be the recommended on the Lotus too... at least in stock sizes. going to put these on the MG when the current ones die.

Thanks for the advice guys

I have just bought some 11 spoke wheels, so I am after the AP front calipers and EBC discs.

Are the calipers a straight fit onto my Mk1 and can some please explain exactly what carriers and spacers are please (I think I know but I don't want to make any stupid mistakes). I want to make sure I get all the bits I need so that I don't look a complete idiot when my mechanic friend helps me fit them. I think I need some longer bolts?

I like the look of the EBC turbo discs (GD1176), would these be ok?

The car is for road use so what would be the best pads to ensure sensible wear on the discs?

And finally, does anyone know the best place to get these from, the discs I have seen for sale are all about £150 for a pair.

Thanks again for all your help.

OK carriers- The standard caliper comes in two parts. The carrier, which attaches to the hub and holds the pads in place and the caliper itself, which attaches to the carrier and clamps around the pads.

The AP calipers are all one piece so no carriers.

Spacers- are used to move the wheel out to give clearance between the caliper and the inner edge of the wheel. Not needed with 11 spoke wheels, which were designed for the APs. The aps are a straight fit on all MGF/TFs.

Standard bolts will fit.

I buy my discs/pads etc from Ebay. I use anyone with good feedback, TBH. IMO, standard 304m discs and pads will give you sufficient braking for road use.

OK - I now have a set of calipers, that came with used discs that still have plenty of life in them.

What is the best way to clean both the calipers and discs before the're installed please?
