This is just a moan about upgrading your ECU

If its something you have thought of and looked at the cost of, then here's a run down of what no one will tell you

Firstly the cost isn't just the quoted about £580

things you need:

i.e. Emerald ECU
Map switch with resistor
RS232 to USB convertor
delivery
+ all the VAT and your now at about £750 and thats just with a base map to get it started

now you have it running you need

a rolling road day £280 + vat, so about £350

think you've finished nahhhhhhhhhh

your standard lambda sensor won't give the responsive readings needed to adjust the fuel maps quick enough or with a decent enough range

Soooo you now need a new wide band Lambda, about £120 + vat an thats without a gauge to see what its doing so your looking at about £180

Total to change an ECU an get it all sorted just short of £1,300 and thats if you fit it all your self

I thought I'd just post it as its clear as mud when your looking

As with anything, it is always the total price that's the killer, not the quoted price. I don't think it is a fault of Emerald in this case as the options and choices are so wide ranging that to sell as a kit would probably mean that you are paying for bits that you personally didn't need.

Yeah thats true, and it will work as it is :)

just a good excuse for a moan...lol

roll on pay day I've spent it already ....lol

but you must admit its a bit of a surprise to find the price doubles to get it running at its best

Emerald as a company I must say are amazing, so helpful and bend over backwards to help, sending extra instruction, maps or advice

i just got a 2nd hand emerald and loom adapter for £450, and going to take it for rolling road set up in a few weeks.
all in all i budgetted about £900 for the swap...
i dont see that as being expensive or un-reasonable for what you get...

Especiially when something like a motec ecu starts at about £4000!!!

Also bought a 2nd emerald to run my Jag V8 that im putting in my old lotus :) which should be fun!

£1000 just on 2 emeralds in the last months! oops! lol! shockingly Mrs Oz hasnt killed me yet, but the MGF is her car, so i guess she doesnt mind if we both get an Emerald! at least i dont have to buy her diamonds! :p

I also have to echo your comments on Emerald, even though i have 2 2nd handd units they are being super helpful, and my friend Ian who is helping me with the V8 knows Dave quite well, says hes a top chap.

The only problem I'm having at the mo is the first couple of minutes starting in a morning, but people have been so helpful

I've had loads of maps sent to see me through till I get it on a rolling road so if you need a base map to work from give me a shout

Dave Andrews who did my ported and polished head, plus Piper 633's and vernier pulleys provided me with a map for his ported and polished head, piper 633s, and a 52mm throttle body...
If thats any help to you i can send you that as a good basis to start from...
im using that as the base, then mapping on a rolling road (only difference in my set up is 48mm Tb instead of 52mm) so should be a very minor adjustment.
This map was making 151bhp at the wheels in a K-Series Elise with a 4-2-1 Manifold and all the above bits.

Btw why did you need a wide-band lambda? never heard of emerald needing that before... was it pre-cat or post cat?

Oz.

yeah cheers any map that I can use is always good, even if it just sorts my cold start

I was looking at the adaptive mapping an they recommend the wide band for that, an in all honesty a gauge to show if its running lean when using Nos would really help stopping me melt pistons too.....lol

So, do you think the rough starting might be over/under fueling when cold?
