MGTF - Tyres

I need to replace the rear tyres but I understand TF's are tyre sensitive. The existing ones are Continentals and are original from the factory. They have worn very well having covered 27,000 miles. Should I just aim to replace them with Continentals of the same spec or are there other suitable makes?

Surprisingly Continentals are not favoured by drivers of our cars. They are long lasting but performance wise, people prefer other makes.

I assume that you have 15" wheels on the car as MGR fitted Goodyear eagle F1 gsd2 to 16" wheels.

There is a guide here that should give you some ideas.

You could probably replace all 4 tyres for the cost of two Continentals

For 15" wheels my personal recommendation would be Nexen 2000. A good grippy tyre with good wear characteristics. Many people love Toyo T1-R but they don't last as long.

Who would do that? ;)

The problem with Continentals is that they are a victim of their own success. You say they are the original tyres, how old is the car? Bearing in mind that you should change tyres around the 3 year mark and never have them on longer than 5 years. Conti's are also less grippy due to the harder compound which makes them last so long.

Davids advice is good, it should be, as he loves rubber. :)

Keep an eye on the MG Rover website. They have completed testing and will soon publish a new updated recommended tyre list for the F/TF.

When I first got Meg's 16's years back now I shod them in Falken 452's.... damn fine tyres. Last a long time and have really good grip. I have not had any issues with them at all and so decided to fit them again for this MOT as the rears had finally got close to the limit.

They are well priced and seem to shed water quite well... plus they 'look' nice, and have an alloy protector ring built in (although as I found to my detriment the curb outside my house to higher than standard and scraped it anyway! GRRRR

When I got my TF back in August it had a mix of Continentals on the front and Goodyears on the rear. I've switched to Yokohama S.Drives all round and they've been great.

Back with front wheel drive and 181HP at the wheels :)
