Got the wheel off eventually am now waiting to change alt belt. Do alternators seize up if stood for ages

The alternator can seize if left for a long time.- the belt will squeal like mad.
If you suspect it has seized, it would be worth loosening the belt and rotating by hand. An application of release spray onto the bearing area may free it.
