What is this?
Please could someone tell me what this is and what is it used for?
Looking at getting a new exhaust and have noticed that some do not come with this sensor

It's a silly valve that shuts off the offside tailpipe at low revs.
It's to do with passing some noise test or other.
So, at low revs you only use one tailpipe.
You can do without it. You can also disconnect the pipe to it, and you just need to block the pipe and alls good!
Most aftermarket exhausts don't have it!

My son posted the question thinking this device had something to do with lambda!
So pleased to know that this can be discarded along with the back box and I can get the motor back on the road. (No mention of it in the workshop manual - although that's an easy read - not!!!!!
My day is now made - thanks David
