brake light switch

Hi all
Is there a knack to adjusting the brake light switch?Just come back from MOT and now brake lights on all the time.Looked at the manual and it just says to depress brake pedal and pull out brake switch plunger and release pedal.My plunger will not pull out,does the switch need to be adjusted by the two locknuts on the swich barrel as on motor cycles?

It will pull out, they're just really stiff.
