Hi All,
I am intending to sort out my rear tie bar bushes either by compliance washers or poly bushes.Looking at all the compliance washer threads lithium grease is mentioned to lubricate/seal the fitment.Throughout my 47 years in engineering and tinkering with cars and motorcycles the mixing of rubber and inappropriate greases was a no no due to the grease making the rubber go soggy over time, has anyone used the red rubber grease as an alternative?
Alternatively does anyone know the best/cheapest supplier of the tie bar polybushes.
Regards Neil

Hi Neil,

Are you saying that Lithium grease shouldn't be used on rubber bushes? Is 'red rubber grease' the correct lubricant?
I went down the compliance washers route so I don't know a/. How polybushes affect the ride or b/. A good supplier.

Hopefully someone will be along soon with a more useful post.

Hi David,I don't know for definate either but I am extremely wary what greases /oils comes into contact with any rubber.I own a Honda Goldwing and a few years ago spilt some final drive oil onto my tyre which I immediately wiped off.A week or so later going round some hairpin bends in Germany I heard a flapping noise on right handers which on investigation proved to be a 6" delaminationof the side wall in the same area as the oil was spilt.
I would rather only do the job once that's why I thought I would put it open for discussion as I am relatively new to MGs and I know there is a wealth of knowledge out there.
Once again David thanks for your rapid response.
Best regards Neil

Hi Neil, "red rubber grease" is used for lubricating the rubber seals on brake caliper seals, boots etc as it does not damage rubber like other oils and greases. there is also a special grease that is used with polyurathene bushes, which is normaly supplied with the bush kit. I seem to recall that someone on this forum made compliance washers from an IKEA chopping board rather than paying the £15 per side for the poly ones!!!! i will see if i can find it for you (could have been on the previous forum) i will also give you some details of the poly kits that you can get. hope this helps ~ Bryan  :roft:

Hi Bryan ,
Have got IKEA board at the ready and know all the dimensions.I have read quite a few "how to"s on the subject, need to sort out if the socket or cranked ring spanner is the best way to go for the 13mm bolt.
Then the headache starts as to which settings to use for the 4 wheel alignment, again there are alot of preferences on the forum.
Best regards Neil

I found the culprit, it was Adam Elphic (moderator here) that made his own washers from the IKEA board, the first ones were the wrong size, its deiter's site that has the correct size. he put loads of grease on to keep the water out. apparently the bush/washers need to be tightened up to pull everything up ,then loosened and pulled down to the correct torque with the wheels on the ground, four wheel laser tracking afterwards and the difference was amazing.
I will ask Adam to dig out his old post and "How To" with pictures. it also gives the toe in/toe out settings he used.
Brown & Gammons do a compliance washers kit, BGF 9200 for £10.22 plus postage if you dont feel like making them.
Is the suspension pumped up to the correct height ? which is so important too.
Please let us all know how you get on.  :S
