Reading the horror stories regarding HGF would it not be logical to pay someone to replace the HG on my TF 135 for the Land Rover version before the HG fails and I'm left with horrendous bills. I would pay for an expansion warning system at the same time. My car has done just over 30,000 miles and has a FSH. Or am I being too paranoid!!

Why fix it when it isn't broke? It's something that may never happen but if you are worried about it keep £400 in a safe place just incase
A low coolant alarm would be a good investment though :yesnod:

^^ +1
its not a given the HG will go, there are plenty of K series engines out there on +100k miles on the original gasket. Failure is more often than not due to poor maintenance.

Would echo what Pete said. Don't panik. Enjoy the car and keep a little bit sensitive.
My 99 MK1 MGF has done now 145k km with the first gasket.
Wherin I need to say, I avoid any visit to official workshop maintanance since the car has got 2 years old.
No trust to the anones
DIY and you know what you've damaged yourself
Low level coolant sensor is mandatory, and also te annual checks and regular service for timing belt and belt tensioner.
Also I'd recommend to add a offset thermostat (PRT) to increase the inner coolant volume. I think your TF has already the PRT. It depends on the VIN.
Regards
Dieter

Having unecessary head work done can actually cause problems.
It's not unheard of for an engine to be damaged after a HG replacement due to coolant hoses springing leaks after they have been disturbed on a HG replacement.
It is also worth noting that a HG is only as good as the person who fitted it.
