Went to Motorworld today looking for some exhaust finishers - the finishers on the crappy back box I bought have started to rust. The guy there had a look at the pipes and asked if the head gasket had been done

As it happens yes it has, temp fine, not losing coolant, and the oil is clean thanks.

Got me thinking though - what else could be put down to HGF, flat front tyre perhaps.

I was at a petrol station today when a BMZ Z3 pulled up at the pump next to me. While filling up the guy says to me "Head gasket gone yet?'" I looked bewildered at him and then said "no mate runs great ".

"I had one of them (he said gesturing towards my MGF) head gasket went twice, cost me thousands ££££"

I said you should have fitted a multilayer gasket and a low coolant warning kit first time - ;) problem solved.

"Anyway the amount that (I said gesturing towards his Z3) has depreciated in value in a year you could have got yourself a very nice TF and enjoyed not having to pay £350 a month on the instalments for that :P

He turned away at this point and finished refuelling in silence, thankfully.
