As a 2001 I would think its Mems3. If so then My first port of call would be to get an OBD2 reader on it, and see what comes up. This will point to any problems.
Has the car always been the same, or is this slow pickup recent? If so what work has been done in the interim?
Slow pick up could be timing, has it had a Cambelt change recently?
What are your actual revs limited to on your car at the moment? 7200?Or less?

I Wonder if this could be an oil pick up problem??? the loud tapping is the cam followers being starved of oil (simmilar to Kevin's with the black tar in the sump) Kevin did say that the performance was down, which is consistent with the followers not opening the valves properly. :omg:
