well got my mgf up for sale had a few people come and view the car, im realy supprised at the lack of knowledge people have with the mgs. not one person was interested in the cambelt change or head gasket or what to look for when buying a mgf/tf. i might come across a bit eccentric but id rather let them know what to look for when buying a mgf/tf , even if its not mine. i hate to see people get ripped off,i have passed the forum details on to potentional bidders hopefully they will take note even if they dont buy my car, but at least if they do buy a mgf/tf theres a site they can rely on if they need any help.i would hate to see mgf/tfs just scrapped because owners are not familer when they go wrong :nonod:

It doesn't surprise me at all, tbh.
My family has an association with an Estate Agent, and the number of people willing to offer 100s of £1000 on houses without the slightest idea of what they are doing, astounds me. :omg:

I agree, but I bought my wife a rover 25 on ebay with a blown head gasket for 150.the car was dirty and looked a heap, took the engine head off, found they had put a new head gasket on,disgarded the shim and used loads of bath sealant to help a seal, they had also moved the pistons with the head off and broken the seals round the liners.so I spent 4 hours cleaning and putting the car back together, working on an engine put in the wrong end of the car was confusing. And a full day cleaning with steam cleaner and powerful cleaning products the trade uses got a rover 25 in show room condition. And my wife loves it,its a fine looking car.And a top of the range one as well
I purchased a renault espace on ebay with a blown head gasket.not understanding french cars at all it was due to be taken to a good friend of mine who earns a living working for renault.
I arrived at the persons house to collect the car I had paid 410 on ebay. The scuffy chap who sold it said He had paid £2800 for it only 14 months ago and showed me the paper work.
The car has no compression and both me and my mate say it needs a new head.cash was exchanged and we pushed this large renault espace grande onto the road.
I no nothing about diesels at all,but I do know if they can get there engines up to speed they can start. So with my wife driving the recovery truck so towed me up to 30mph.And it started, and when we stopped it was still running,my wife blew the air hours and was waving for me to cut the engine, she said water is pouring fromthe car.Just as the owner had warned me it would.I looked down and saw it was in fact diesel not water.so we started the car and there was fuel pouring out of the injector.and that was causing the car to lose power, fuel starvation not a ruined head.so she is still off to renault, for a service and to be fixed.
Reading what you guys know its safe for you chaps to fix your cars, and you do better then a lot of garages.but there are a lot of people who do roadside repairs that are dangerous.the two people I have mentioned lost money, but could have lost more.We see cars often with dangerous home repairs.fuel hoses fixed with selotape with fuel misting over electric, home welding, and wiring joined with masking tape.

sounds like my house was when I bought it and some of that was work done by so called professionals.....

When I sell cars it is either to a dealer as a trade in so I leave them to check it out properly or as a banger with all faults declared privately.

If you want to read a story about the quaility of work by a so called proffesional garage that are still trading all be it in a different part of the country under a different name follow this link to my website - http://home.btconnect.com/talkingcars/T16con.htm
