The length of my response was in direct proportion to the frustrations of getting stuck ball joints etc out of my car. It's satisifying to get a job done on your own with ordinary tools - but a heck of a lot easier with the right ones!

place the socket over the ball joint remains, and hammer it on to the ball joint.then with a big bar undo the top ball joint.
Because the ball joints are kept in with a tread hold compound there dont suffer from rusting.and your replacements must also have tread holder applied as well.
As a company we never use wd40 plus gas any where around customers brakes. Our cars have to be in and out so the customer can have there car back.
But if you place a right size socket and good size bar then it will come off easy promise
