we have two cars in today both had a lot of work done buy local garages.
car one.low milage .
top end rattle and misfire.
its a lovely vvc in blue and a well loved car.been serviced and headgasket bill £900.
we have now got it,old type gasket used and bolts not done up,and the head taken apart and the wrong sealant used,so the oilways are blocked.so one low milage head ruined by a garage.
so we have to get a recon head, correct head gasket.
car 2.
head gasket fitted at cost of £800 plus parts.by local garage
car over heating badly.
took head off, water almost solid with k seal.gasket sealer all over the head gasket, and the head is cracked where its been driven around and getting very very hot.
so another recon head.
Im just glad these cowboys dont fly planes or look after our nucler power stations.
I rang one of the garages up to tell him what I think of his work and his workmanship. His response well it was alright when it left us.Lets hope he goes bungee jumping and the chap who looks afer the rope has the same standard of workmanship.
These two jobs are just a two of many.and they really are cowboy jobs.People have no pride in there work these days,or just want to rip people off

Sad but true, mate.
Good mechanics / good garages are few and far between. They are like diamonds...if you find one, treasure them/it.! :yesnod:

Many years ago I worked at a small British Sports Car Shop owned by a New Zealander.
When he solved a particularly vexing problem he would sing..."Anything you can fix I can fix better, I can fix anything better than you" to no-one in particular. Fortunately it was true...and he was a good bloke too!

this is why so many rover/mgs are being broken up, these garages dont care its easy money to them. i think we should have a nationwide mg good garage guide, so that our forum members no who to trust when carrying out head gasget etc work :broon:

to be frank a lot of mg members are being charged excessive money to put things right on there cars, as they are not all as good with spanners like ccj and dave etc  . we need to keep the mgf/tf forum active and create more members othrerwise i can see us dwindling in numbers. a good garage guide is good not only for the garage but for the salvation of the mgf/tf brand. and word of mouth speaks volumes.

Hi Daz - i have suggested that one of our club members gets in touch with you, he has a nice TF VVC and the top end is a bit clattery, someone has suggested that the VVC head is on the way out and its a mega expensive job!!!!!! Although he lives in Mitcham in Surrey he would be prepared to bring the TF down so you could give it the "once over" ~ i will also send him a copy of your article in last months MG Enthusiast.
I loved your soloution to the Cowboy mechanics, special bungee rope !!!!!! :bust:
