My first point of inspection would be the loom at the nearside boot hinge. Breaks occur in the wiring due to the constant flexing.
Open up the loom and check all the wires within.

Breaks in the loom wiring at this point is a common problem and was the subject of an article by the MG Owners Club a few months ago. i was talking to an F owner recently who said the rear lights would only come on with the boot open!! and went out when closed  i said where to look and as he was unable to do the work himself, call out Russell . I had a simmilar problem on a Hotpoint Fridge Freezer with the control panel mounted on the door, the cable had broken from flexing at the hinge (very bad design as it is only two years old) new cable £25 plus postage another £9 ~ guess what, i opened the outer sheath and rejoined the broken wires with in line crimps and re wrapped the whole lot, would have liked to use heat shrink wrap but could not get it over the end connectors.
Please let us know if this was your problem, it is good to have feedback :broon:

thanks for your reply had a quick look after stripping tape, of outer casing pulling the wires out. I found there is 2 black wires joined together and 1 black wire coming from this join going out to the lights, will look better when more time.

This was a loom/earth problem.
