im looking at changing the coolant expansion tank as its that filthy inside , ive tried steam cleaning but to no joy , i carnt even see the coolant from the outside. i strongly believe that some one has put k seal or simler in it . im just hoping that im proved wrong. there is no overheating and the only sign seems to be a small mayo on the dipstick but this is only on a short run then it dissapears.apart from the mgf will another rover expanson tank fit the f/tf.

No, as far as I know.

You could try one from a Volkswagen Polo 6N (not the 9N ) with blue coloured cap.
Another bracket is required to get it fitted to the MGF/TF frame.
It's a ball shape canister and some german guys in our forum are quite pleased with it. A sensor is included. Another electronic circuit for signal processing required, though.

 Yep, but see the blue cap is missing.
There are more UK based auctions available. p/n Volkswagen 6N0 121 407 B
And in the flesh direct from a breaker you may also get the piece of cable with connector to design your own harness easy.

I have battled with these ball shaped VAG tanks before; they have two metal strips inside at the base (for the ECU to measure resistance). These tend to collect sedimentary deposits which stuff the measurement. There's no way to get them clean - just replace the tank.

So... you might as well get a new MGF tank. The MGF partnumber does not have mulitple vehicle looks ups on Rimmers site and therefore I should think the tank is MGF/TF specific. I think Sussex Classsic Car parts have new genuine tanks in stock as no doubt do others.

As a matter of fact my tank is getting yellow with age although I can tell where the coolant level is looking to the side. However your post prompts me to consider a new one - about £30-40 depending upon source..

Perhaps coca-cola would do it - it's supposed to clean up old coins!
