MGF Starting Issue - Maybe Starter Motor .. was created by dg170775

Hi,

Yesterday, I stopped my MGF outside my office to attend a call, and it wouldn't start again. TRied everything, but, it just wouldn't start.
I called in RAC and they came and said that the cables to the starter motor were quite corroded or something, and they made it functional, to reach office.
In the evening same problem as the car wouldn't start again. Called in RAC again, and this time they again looked at all the connections, and got it going, but, they have issued an advisory note to take it to the garage ASAP, as the starter motor needs to be changed.

Now, I asked the nearest garage (Halfords Autocentre) and they have quoted £153 for the job. I wanted to know if anybody knows a reliable garage around Gloucester, or someone who could fit the part, if I procured the part. I am getting much cheaper parts of I approach guys like MGRoverSpares, who are ready to ship the starter motor for £35 + 2 months warranty.

Any suggestions would be great...

A new MGR starter motor with solenoid from Sussex Classic car parts is £148 plus postage. (no exchange) so £35 is cheap. ~ Perhaps Daz can tell you of someone in Gloucester area who could fit it for you, i think i would perlace the cables too. :bust:

I would clean the cable ends at the battery and starter first.
You could save some money.

I looked online and there are a few links that look genuine
http://www.startermotor-alternator-store.co.uk/mg-mgf--11kw-starter-motor--16-18-t208-3774-p.asp
http://www.cbccarspares.co.uk/mgf-starter-motor---stm599-frs464-2951-p.asp

I am getting at these sites for £85 & £80, respectively.

Are these good ones? And if I get the motor from these sites, anybody know who could fit it for me in Gloucester? And how much would they charge? Halfords Autocentre have quoted me £155 for the full job.

Rich, I'm not quite good at these things.
Is it an easy job? Could I do it with a few steps from someone?
Maybe a step by step guide here?

It's not a hard job, but give Jon,(rough luck) a call. He'll be able to do what;s necessary, and won't charge you for stuff that doesn't need done. Have a read here:- JON

you may find a couple of things other then the starter motor, first there is an earth lead that is very small from sub frame to rear boot bulk head, these often go,take the starter off and give it a good clean and then copper grease the workings inside.with wet and dry clean battery connection and starter connections, then smear grease on them.starter motors are often thrown away when they just need a bit of a service.all the burnt dust of your clutch lands up on your starter motor, most starters are around the 120 mark, but get one from a scrap yard, and rovers have the same starter as long as it is a k series. Its around 1 hours work.remove your air box and you have loads of room.also disconnect your battery first.its simply two big bolts and a bit of time cleaning .and the spade connector on your starter ,squeeze them a little with pliers so they bite on the motor better.and check your battery first.the main cable runs around 10ft,and that is a lot of cable.

That's the default position on the server. If you don't put your own location in on the map, you are sent to Ohio!

Makes a change from being sent to Coventry, I suppose.

That's good advice from David. If you aren't comfortable doing your own work and aren't close enough to one of the MGF Specialists like Pocket Motors, the Mobile MG Mechanics like Jon are a good bet. They will fix your car for an honest price and even let you watch, ask questions and maybe even help in order to get some experience with your car.
I don't know if their pricing follows the old gag garage sign though......

Labour $20.00 an Hour
$30.00 if you Watch
$40.00 if you Help
