If this is the case will it effect any of the other adjustments & what is the best way of dropping the cable off the ball without damaging.
Thanks in advance

You can just lever the joint apart. Check that all the nuts and bolts are tight at the gear lever end first.avandr wrote: My gear leaver seems to hit the console when selecting first & third gear, is it just a matter of adjusting the main cable forward to bring the lever back?

to remove the ball joint, simply prise off with a screw driver, twisting it 45 degress.
but I dont mean to be rude,if your un sure on how to remove the ball end then you shouldnt be thinking off adjusting the cable.
the problem may lay in the gear stick set up in the car.unless you really know what you are doing you are best leaving it.We see around 2 cars a week where customers have had a go at fixing and caused more problems often with a large bill. :nonod:

In the end I replaced the gearlever assembly and that solved my problems.
If you do decide to do your own adjustments only rotate the ball end one turn at a time, checking all the gear functions after each adjustment. Keep track of how many turns in case you have to return it to your starting point, and only adjust one cable at a time.
For fore/aft adjustment you adjust the lower cable at the gearbox. I found a 13mm wrench works well to pop the ball off the bellcrank.
You may find that the rubber in the ball end had deteriorated due to oil contamination. That would throw your adjustment way out.
For some pics of the cable ends check out my How-to on the How-to page.
Good luck!
