Trophy Dimension Needed

I recently got a Trophy rear spoiler for my MGF and hope to fit it in a week or two. (After covering it with Carbon fibre look vinyl :lol: )
Would someone mind measuring the distance from the rear edge of the bootlid to the back of the inner support stanchions for me? I want to mount it properly without drilling any extra holes in the boot lid!

On mine I make it at 20 mm. On the inside the corresponding rear most mounting bolt is 15 mm from the rear inside of the boot lid, assuming your bolts mounted on the spoiler are located at the same point as the oem ones.

I got this spoiler from B&G. It's a copy of an original.
The glass seems well done but I have no confidence that the studs are in the proper position so I am just going to use the dimension from the rear of the boot lid to locate it. (Thanks for the 20mm GIR!)
Did the original spoilers have the mountings in the inboard or outboard stanchions? This one has them in the inboard.
B&G's pdf instructions appear to show them in the outboard so they are no use.
A little measuring and I should be off to the races ...Never mind sanding, priming and wrapping (NOT "Rapping"! :sick: )

Mine is mounted to the boot lid at both inboard and outboard stanchions, but from memory the outboard stanchions are not actually attached to the spoiler. I'll check when i get a chance.

Ditto.
The outer stanchion (part) of the spoiler slots onto a stanchion (lower part) attached to the boot lid.

I'll get a photo, if you hang on.

OK, having had a good look at the setup. The outer stanchion is attached to the boot lid. There is a recess in the spoiler that the top of this stanchion rests in.

It seems that the repro spoiler isn't as sophisticated as the original (No surprise there I suppose)
I'm kind of kicking myself that I didn't buy a shop soiled NOS spoiler that was on E-bay a few weeks ago, but if the outer stanchions were missing it could have been a bigger issue.
I'm off outside now to see if this spoiler will fit with the mounting bolts supplied or if I will have to modify it.
I don't want to bolt it through any double skinned portions of the bootlid.

OK...Here we go...Measure.
I used the supplied measurement of 20mm (3/4") to mark a line from the rear edge of the bootlid to the rear of the inboard spoiler stanchions.
I then measured and marked a centerline on the bootlid and measured out from that point to locate the hole positions.
This was complicated in my case as one of the mounting bolts is bonded into the spoiler at an angle. The angle is bad enough that I would have sent it back if I wasn't 8000 miles from the vendor. Instead I just allowed for it in my hole placement.

Next Step...Drill.....COMMITMENT!
First-Offer the spoiler up to your marks to make sure they are in the correct position!

I started by drilling 3mm (1/8") pilot holes, then opened up the boot lid and checked their location.
The rearward holes came through in an area with a doubled thickness of metal and were slightly forward of the center
of this area so I drilled a second set of pilot holes 3mm farther forward. These holes were in the perfect spot so I took them out to full size. I drilled them to 8mm (3/8") but a spoiler with straighter stud placement could get away with smaller holes.
Remember-It's easy to make holes bigger. Making them smaller is much more difficult! :ohmy:

Warning! Don't do this while under the influence!

Test Fit
At this point I tried the spoiler to see if the holes worked out.

They did, although the crooked stud has to go in first.
My 3M Di-noc carbon fibre effect vinyl should arrive in a week or so but
in the meantime I will paint the holes with rustproofing paint, make up some
neoprene gaskets for the spoiler to bootlid and below for the nut/washer to bootlid
joins. I will also paint the stanchions to match the car finish as I'm not sure if the vinyl
will wrap their small compound curves properly. The rest of the spoiler will be
block sanded and primed with a dark primer.


Here is a bit of a jump ahead showing the bolt and washer arrangement inside the boot lid.
The fender washers have neoprene washers the same size underneath. The depression under the upper washer is filled with black RTV sealant as well. Neoprene gaskets are also fitted between the stanchions and the boot lid, hopefully preventing any leaks.


David, It seems this thread has turned into a bit of a How-to.
Please wait for the vinyl wrap bit before moving and locking it.
That's something I haven't done before so it should be...Ahem...Interesting!
