Driving Pleasures MGF style

Last week I had to catch an early Sunday morning flight from Stansted, I headed out at 0430 and went via the country lanes for a change. I also took the F since I had hand luggage only and would miss a week of driving her. Once released of the local towns cameras and traffic lights I could then let loose on a 40 min X country run through the lanes.
I now know the true please of driving! no stop starts, no lights, no traffic just bendy black top and a mid engined car :woohoo:
For once I was able to hit every gear shift when the road demanded ( not traffic), clip every apex to optimise the corner speed and finally keep enough heat in my pads to shorten braking distance. This was what MGF ownership was all about! those frustrating days of lying prostrate under the car trying to fix something or scrape knuckles due to spanner slipping were all forgotten. It was the wind noise, the roar of the K & N and the feedback from the wheel as I turned into every bend, combining with a bit of cornering G pushing me deeper into the seat. I think the bloke at the car-park bus stop must of thought I was on drugs with the fixed grin of true pleasure stitched on my face when I arrived.
The Summer is ending and weather is not optimal for roadster driving, however that drive will be remembered whenever I double de-clutch downshift over the winter months and why owning a MGF was one of the best decisions I ever made. All the man hours spent tinkering to keep her running and niggling issues disappear in the euphoric haze once the car is allowed to be driven as designed.
lets keep these cars on the road as intended, to be driven as their designers envisioned before we are all forced to succumb to the bland unconnected experience of modern motoring and of just getting from A to B.
Drive on fellow MG 'rs !

Posted 13 years 3 weeks ago #30323Totally agree with that! We're lucky in Cumbria that the majority of roads are like that. :yesnod:

Tourbillon, thank you so much for so eloquently describing the feeling of an early morning drive in our preferred drive on its favourite type of road.
There are indeed few things which could possibly surpass it. However, I would suggest that there is one which pushes it in to second place.
That is the drive through those very country roads surrounded fore and aft by fellow club members, as in an almost perfect synchronisation you snake through the countryside accompanied by the exhilarating, harmonious chorus of a variety of exhaust and induction tones as the MGF/TF roller coaster forges on, just for the sheer unadulterated pleasure of driving, no other reason, no destination, just because you want to drive. All change gear within a fraction of a second of each other as if as one, the ride is intoxicating and the faces of unsuspecting onlookers beam with surprise and delight at the sight and sounds to which they are witness.
Oh, if you have never experienced the thrill of an MGF/TF run in the country with the club - get to one - you will not regret it, that's a promise.
The Summer is ending and weather is not optimal for roadster driving - Get the hood down, put the heater on and drive on a crisp autumnal or winter evening, just as the sun is setting or at midnight with the stars for your headlining.
I then challenge you to return here and tell us you didn't absolutely love it.
The MGF/TF - So much pleasure it almost makes you feel guilty. :woohoo:

I can only add that this is unbelievable fun. :yesnod: Add in heated seats and the patented Leigh Ping air scarf and you have perfection!

Absolutely the best smiles per £ I have ever acheived was buying our Mk1 F 15 months ago :yesnod:
I feel so sorry for the people who drive along in their oversized tanks and will never experience the pleasure of driving 'properly'. Just think, I used to be one of them until I saw the light :woohoo:
