Stupid naive question....spring washers

Now I have discovered my manifold is leaking at the downpipe joint and some of the bolts have worked loose. As they are not fixed at the top, cant tighten them from the bottom only so will have to dismantle car again.
Anyway, question is, should I have used spring washers? What are they for? Where do they go lol!
No point in tightening them all up again if they are going to come loose soon after

Posted 13 years 3 weeks ago #30714do you know if they go over a normal washer? ie. normal washer/spring washer/bolt
or just between manifold and bolt

Posted 13 years 3 weeks ago #30717Having said that you can use the spring washer alone. I would use a flat washer in the cobination if I was fixing to a soft surface say wood or plastic

Posted 13 years 3 weeks ago #30718I did try one when I first fitted it and it didn't seem right on its own so will put in between flat washer and bolt....
Might as well get it done whilst the sun shines

I would only fit the split spring washers supplied as the sharp bit of the oblique cut spring washer cuts into the two faces of manifold and nut stopping them vibrating loose. you could also us a drop of the proper type of LOCKTITE ~ the use of a plain washer could mean that plain washer/spring washer/nut combo could turn together and still become loose.
You could also pm Daz to ask how he fits them

That's where my next homer award comes in....I threw them out! Doh!
Got some new ones today though but by the time I had negotiated a pre-christmas city , it was getting dark by time I got back so will have to wait till tomorrow....
Interestingly, took the F and it was as bad today, the noise was "normal" and it didn't sound like there is a leak, but there is a smell of exhaust fumes in the cabin so it must be. Also it seems to idle higher until warmed, whcih only started after I fitted it and ran about for a while
