Bit of bad luck
Went in the bonnet to get some top up coolant. Left bonnet unlatched for return. Topped up, then dropped container in boot to remind me it needed refilling later in the day. Then went in the house to get some stuff I needed to take with me. Got sidetracked and forgot bonnet was left unlatched ..... Think you can guess the rest
Offside bracket is erm ..
and nearside of bonnet is a new shape ...
I suppose I'm lucky it didn't smash the windscreen.
Anyway, one on ebay .... right colour and only 10 miles away. £74 with 14 days to run.

Lesson to be learned.... If you're not going to close bonnet properly at least engage the latch to safety.
I feel such a prat and am kicking myself.

I was working under the bonnet yesterday and had it propped. The wind managed to lift the bonnet off the prop and drop it on me.

A tad wind assisted. I was travelling at about 50mph at the time of lift off. Was extremely lucky on several accounts. A. There was a hard shoulder I was able to pull up on safely; which was handy as i couldn't see, what with the bonnet laying flat against the windscreen. B. It didn't smash the screen. C. One of the brackets held and it didn't fly over the car into anyone following me.
Interestingly; of the couple of cars behind and one on coming .... not one stopped to check if all was ok.
Ouch with the head David, always seem to get mine on the boot catch!

It's happened to me twice, first time my ex was sitting in the passanger seat of my early scirroco, she lent foward , said whats this and pulled the latch (which on early mk1 scirrocos was int the passanger foot well), that was bonnet, screen, dented roof!
Second time was when I worked for the local VW dealer, salesman managed to prang a golf that had just come in, head mechanic put the car up in the air to relese the bonnet, I was then sent to the body shop, nobody told me the bonnent had no catch! I ended up taking the bonnet off with the spanner I always carried and stuck it in the boot.

We used to test drive customers' cars on a long bridge where we could get up to speed. One day I was testing a customer car, and when I reached a certain speed the bonnet started to rise. Luckily I was able to react before it reached the tipping point and as I slowed it slowly dropped back down. That was a close one!
