Hi All,

MGF went for her Mot today and passed but got 2 advisories with rear tyres on the limit and play in the steering rack on the passenger side.

Is there any adjustment on the drum sticks or they a full replacement and if so where is the best place to either get a new one or reconditioned, bit unsure about buy a rack of ebay because i dont what im getting until ive got it delivered and has any one removed and replaced one.

Shes a 1999 Mk 2 MGF

any advice would be great.

Had to give her a good blast to get her through the emissions,Just scrapped it.

But happy with the result.

Just ordered 2 toyos from camskill

Are you sure it's play in the rack? Play in the rack would show normally both sides equally.
Specifying one side would suggest it's the track rod end.

I totally agree with that  it does seem strange to say that one end is worn. can you check it without removing the gaiter first??

David, just changed both track rod ends in november,if i move the wheel in and out, there is a bit of play inside the steering gaiter and see and feel the drum stick moving but no movement on the steering wheel

Ah so its play on the inner end of the track rod. :yesnod:
You can get them replaced but it's a specialist job. You be better off getting a good secondhand one from MGFnTFBits. It'll be cheaper.

I got a track rod replaced on a Nissan steering rack and that was £75.

track rods dont cost the earth
to change the rack you have to drop the sub frame down so easier to replace the arm

mad about cars and bikes :)
if it aint broke dont fix it :)

Not sure if it's the same part, but we have the steering rack off George (Mk 1 MGF vvc 1997) that you can have for delivery charge/pick up if it's any help :-?

It certainly fits, but may be different...i believe one is a 'yellow band' and one is a 'red? band'...the TF rack is supposed to be superior, but I can't say I've noticed much difference between them (I've owned a Mk I, Mk II and a TF!)

Birks,

Thanks for the brilliant offer for the steering rack but a friend of mine has a TF rack that i can have and will replace when the weather warms up.

Can't believe how generous the MGF/TF community is.
