Well, the obvious answer is that the rear is far too high, so it could be a rubber bumper conversion, but that seems rather, well, obvious.

96 MGF 1.8i: Project Rally Car
98 MGF Abingdon" 285H cams, modded head etc
87 MG Metro: 1440cc fast road car
88 MG Metro Turbo
70 MG Midget: 1.9L VVC + supercharger + RWD = YEEHAA!
72 MGBGT: Project Speed 6 MGB
05 MG ZT-T 260: wife's sensible car
01 MG ZS 180: LHD, for driving around Germany in

An early M Reg would still be chrome bumper, and as far as I can tell the grille and over-riders are correct for that year. Not sure if the green is an original shade, seems slightly darker, but the ST spoiler is not a production item, it is definitely aftermarket. The inidcators and side lights are the correct way round.

The rear ride height is slightly high, possibly it's been fitted with parabolic springs? Also quite likely but with out searching for longer it seems to have the look of a car that has had serious money thrown at the restoration and that hints at a V8 under the bonnet although there are no actual clues that I can see such as a bulge.

I did think it was too obvious, don't know the reg/year correlation myself :) Rear is about 2-3" to high, at a guess, unless it's running on 13" wheels which is pretty unlikely given I don't think they don't fit over the handbrake lever. Have seen one or two other very alte chrome bumper cars that sit about that high, and wondered if they ended up with rubber bumper rear springs before. Grille and overriders are 73-74 spec. Just looked up reg think, and yes M is definitely last of the chrome bumper cars.

I didn't say V8 cos that's not very unusual in an MGB... ;) Unless it's a Costello, but they all had bonnet bulges.

So in summary, I dunno.

Now I know why I vaguely recognised it, it is the competition prize in the MGOC/Lancaster insurance competition (same as John Newey's competition car, #1/500).

What's unusual? It has featured as a series of articles in Enjoying MG highlighting it's renovation with most items being refurbished or being replaced with new such as new hood and carpets etc.
