Oil Leak
Hi all
Just got back from a 2 week holiday so moved the car for the first time and found a small oil patch. Got the car up on the stands and the gator for the gear box wire has perished.
So the question is can I be sure that this is just the oil leak (very small amount of oil)? Can I replace just the gator or are their other jobs its worth doing at the same time?
I'll change the gearbox oil when I do get round to this just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.
Thanks
PJ

Theres no oil leak there. They are your gear change cables at the gearbox end. The rubbers that have perished are there to prevent road crap entering the cables. I think you must have a slight oil weep a little higher up and the oil is running down..

Thanks for that.
I'll just sort the rubbers then. I haven't owned the car long so need to have a deeper investigation then.

There is an oil seal under the gaiter.
Cut the remains of the gaiter off (it's scrap anyway) and see if the seal is leaking.
It's simple to change, you just pop off the cable ends, knock the retaining pin out of the bellcrank
and pull it off, clean things up, pry the seal out and knock in a new one. :broon:
Here's Rimmers parts page showing the seal. See item #10

Hi all
I have finally got round to sorting this oil leak. It was the seal for the selector shaft which was a fairly easy seal change as Rich suggested above. However it did take about 3 hours to get the retaining pin for the bell crank out.
I change the gear box oil at the same time which was a job that would have needed doing in 10k or so anyway.
Just wanted to say thanks for the help with this and the how to's and the rest of the site proved invaluable. The first proper job I've got done on the MG and I'm dead chuffed.
Thanks all definitely T Bar to the rescue.
Cheers

Well done PJ, I feel for you on the selector shaft pin its a B*&^H, seems to be a binary component to get out, either dead easy or you spend hours on it.
Best of luck with any other work on the car.
