Should I replace the damaged rubber gaiter or does it not matter . Also if it needs replacing is it an easy DIY :broon:

It protects the end of the linkage from water, salt grit etc so it is worth replacing. Better that than a new cable. :yesnod:
They are cheap enough but you need to pop the ball joint off the bellcrank and then unscrew the ball joint end off the threaded of the cable. Someone actually cable tied a finger from a rubber glove in its place. It worked, plus you can pull the finger over the end without unscrewing it.
The end is held by a lock nut so you can use the locknut to mark the position where you need to re-screw the end after fitting the gaiter.

Incidentally if your reverse is a bit 'gratey' going in then screwing the end on by a further two turns will help with selecting reverse.

It sounds much more technical than it is. It's really simple to split the ball joint. I used a suitably sized open ended spanner to ease them apart and then just popped back on with my hands. Use some grease when you put them back together.

The gaiters are available from Rimmers, Brown and Gammon and Mike Satur has the as well I believe.

Good hunting
