MG TF build up. was created by GNK

Hi All.
Things have progressed rather quicker than I thought, mostly in a bid to beat the weather as I don't have the luxury of a garage.

Sorted the broken gear change cable out, I'll do a proper 'how too' but basically one of the threaded ends of one change cable snapped off at the gearbox end, it must have been like that for some time going by the rust in the fracture.
The R3611 rod ends and extensions came from Springfix linkages at www.automotioncomponents.co.uk

This shows the broken shaft having been re threaded (8X1mm) further along plus the plastic sleeve needed shortening by about 10mm.

This shows the 8mm studded rod end fitted along with its extension piece.

And finally this is the whole installation with both cables now fitted with studded rod ends. Setting up was a doddle.

The only minor hiccup was fitting the new exhaust shield when both the rear mounting bolts tore out of the little box section, the shield was missing when I got it.
It's the only bit of rust in the whole car and since I had painted it all I decided to make a pair of brackets out of stainless steel and rivet them to the boot floor. They have 6mm Rivnuts to take the shield and I made up a pair of stainless steel spreader plates to mount it.

MOT time! It passed, but only just because the emissions were on the edge, still! it passed and it's first drive was a hoot.
The suspension is a revelation with the new bushes and shox etc. The steering is pin point, it doesn't bang and crash, the ride is lovely and it grips like hell out of a corner so all in all I'm chuffed to bits.
The gear change is a lot better for the new rod ends at the back and that's before I've done anything to the gear change system up front.

It does have a few teething problems. It's running rich and there is a bad misfire when it's cold and wet, it has new decent HT leads and plugs and a new Lambda sensor.
I'm going to send the injectors off to be cleaned and I'll go over the connectors but otherwise it's been brilliant.

I fitted the MEMS2 system instead of the MEMS3 because it was a direct swap and I didn't need to play around with the engine sensors or get the MEMS3 ECU re mapped for the VVC engine plus later on I hope to get the engine fully tuned with an Emerald set up but for now it's on the road.

More piccies soon.

A very neat and clever solution to a broken gear cable, certainly easier than replacing the whole cable.

A How To would be much appreciated in case other members have a similar breakage at the gear box end of the cable, which is the most likely place I suppose.

I've changed your link as the one you gave wasn't quite correct.

Robin ;)

Nice one, I like an engineered solution.

Running rich maybe down to the wrong signal from a coolant temp sensor, which one have you got fitted?

Thanks Robin and thanks for correcting the site address, a How To on this and the MEMS2 conversion will be along as soon as I can.

I thought that.
It's the correct sensor for the early VVC but that doesn't mean it can't be faulty, actually I think the temp gauge may be reading low, I'm going to change the sensor in any case and have the injectors properly cleaned, they've done over 100K miles!

Bit of a catch question from me, there should be 2 coolant temp sensors and I was hoping you'd tell me the top one is X colour and the lower one is Y colour.

That is how it should be on a mk1 VVC.

like ive mentioned before my tf failed mot on emissions......thinking of coolant sensor and cat change..........it was cured by deleting fault codes in the ecu.
