I beg to differ, if you look at the pic provided of the flag fluttering on it's flagpole, you should notice that the curved edge is being blown away from the corners which are restrained by the halyard ( the rope) to the flagpole..... so on that basis #1 would be correct.

Of course the whole "in distress" discussion is actually about the Union Jack not the Union flag. :nonod:
The Union Jack is of course in the same format as the Ozzie flag(minus the stars, obviously), and now currently white for the Royal Navy, Red for the Merchant Navy.
So the Union Jack being flown upside down is instantly obvious to all, whereas the Union flag being upside down resulta in the above discussions.:woowoo:
