Has any one had any expreiences of NEXEN CP641 tyres on the rear of an MGF . My motor snakes slightly in the wet and icy conditions .
Could this be the NEXEN's or is it a mechanical issue ?
Great Forum by the way :)

Mike,
The Nexen CP641 is a Summer tyre and could have reduced grip in icy conditions, but if you have snaking even in wet conditions, that could be movement in any of the rear bushes/ball joints; tyre pressures/tyre tread depth; or brake or suspension issues.

Really you need to get the rear of the car checked out.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but it could be any of the above.:dunno:

thank you D&S
the tyres are vitually new with plenty of tread and pressures are per the bible.
Bushes are worth looking at though.
Are compliance bush kits worth fitting do you know?
To add more info-the last tyres fitted according to my history were EXALTO PILOTS , although the tread was just legal I cannot remember having any snaky issues in the wet last year.
I am new to the MGF game and I had NEXEN's fitted and tracked on the basis that I wanted budget low milage tyres. I did think though that I was getting NEXEN 2000,s -would these have been a better choice on a 15" rim?
Any comments welcome .
Thanks again Mike

Thanks again Mike

The Nexen 2000s do seem to have a better write-up than the ones you've got, but I think yours are a newer tyre than the 2000s. I wonder if they are a replacement to the 2000, just as the 6000 is a replacement to the 3000 in 16"s?

Compliance kits are worth it IMO. A good check is to pull the handbrake on as hard as you can and then see if you can push the rear of the car forward. If the car seems to move significantly you probably have play in those big bushes.

Here is a page from Dieter's site showing where the compliance washers should go. Basically between the end of the bush and the big end washer.

http://www.mgfcar.de/epc/521_OK.htm

I made my own up compliance washers up from some suitably robust plastic type material, and slotted them so that I could just loosen up the nut enough to slip them in either side of the bush. This certainly reduced this movement to near zero.

I have no experience with the tires themselves but i've had continentals in the past and now yokohamahs all i can say is on the F/TF the choice of tires makes a HUGE difference, and oddly enough me, Phil-Hex and CJJ were talking about this yesterday, we went on a b last down some country roads and Phil stuck to the road MUCH better with TOYOs on than i managed with yokohamahs

both our sets of tires are nicely bedded in with plenty of tread and yet i was seriously struggling in the bends... my point? Well i don't have one really except you'd be well off spending money on the best tires you can... there probably the most important thing on your car, i'd save up and spend money on a good set of Toyos instead of looking at your suspension... but thats me lol

either way let us know how you get on :)

Compliance washers IMO are worth it. Have not had any experiance with your brand of tyre and my F has only seen fresh snow for 15 minutes and never ice. In h###ing down rain my Toyo T1R's were excellent, as I have now gone to 16" rims I use Toyo R1R's which is very much a road tyre that is suited for track work, very soft once again give's great grip in the wet BUT not so good when wet and almost freezing. I had to drop preasures down to 22lb at a hillclimb to get some grip compared to 28lb on a hot track!

thanks to everyone who responded to my thread-I have decided to go for the mechanical checks rather than kick the NEXEN's into touch just yet. Found some great info on the ultimatemg site

Hiya Mike! Welcome to the fourm! :)

:welcome2:

Looking forward to hearing how you get on. :yesnod:

On a side note, I'm moving this thread into the technical section or "Pitstop" so that anyone else who has similar technical questions doesn't miss out on this interesting thread. :)
